How to Get Unstuck: Lesson #7
Here's a quick reminder of the lessons I learned so far about getting unstuck.
Learning 1: Stop fighting it and accept whatever situation is keeping me stuck.
Learning 2: I already know what the next step is.
Learning 3: Get out of the rut before I fall in a trench!
Learning 4: I am responsible for me.
Learning 5: The Universe has my back, so trust my instincts, trust my inner knowing!
Learning 6: Before making a choice, step into my vision of who I want to be, the self-confident, self-loving me, and then decide from a place of openness and self-belief.
I discovered that our traps are not always caused by 'bad' stuff. In fact they are more often than not caused by us not being willing to give up the good stuff. For instance, I enjoyed self-'employment' so much that I went on to create two more businesses on my own this time. Years later I got stuck in one because it was so financially successful!
By this time I was married with two kids (in the picture above we are on holiday in Morocco a few years ago), and we relied on the income the property services business I was running brought in. In fact it contributed to a good lifestyle economically. But I was working long hours and seeing very little of my family and when I did see them I was irritable. I felt this niggle inside myself that this wasn't it, there was something else I was meant to be doing. This business was just meant to be a stepping stone not the rest of my life. Still my family relied on me and I couldn't see how I could give it up. What else would I do instead? (Yep. I was ignoring lesson no. 2 and 5. Again!)
This time it took the death of my sister-in-law's sister, Melanie... She was close to me in age. She'd also come from South Africa to the UK around the same time. She'd married here and had two young kids at the time. The similarities were stark. Her death was a shock. She'd kept her cancer to herself until near the end. Her death put everything in perspective for me. Life is short.
Learning no. 7 is that 'as long as I'm alive I can make changes'. As long as I'm alive I'm only stuck out of choice. If I'm stuck I'm only stuck because I want to be. Ooo... that's not easy to hear. Phew!
Because of Melanie I opened my eyes and started to look around to what else might be possible for me. Some people say you have to fully chuck one thing in in order to successfully embrace another. That wasn't an option for me. I needed to carve out time, reducing my income slightly, in my property services work, to find my purpose (that's what my inner niggle was pushing me to do).
Since then I've gone on to find what I was guided to do and I love it and earn a decent living from it while being able to spend time with my family where we all enjoy each other. Like life my work doesn't remain the same and there are times when I get stuck in doing it the way I've got used to doing it, forgetting what I've learned along the way but knowing my life purpose now and having those learnings helps me climb out of my holes pretty quickly these days.
Next Steps: Is your life so good you're stuck in it? Where are you holding yourself back because you might lose something good if you moved ahead? Where are things stagnant? What little changes can you make today to take you one step out of your stagnancy?
In How to Get Unstuck: Lesson #8 I learn about the impact of criticism and what you need to know to stop it keeping you stuck.
