Are You Making This Big Mistake I Did?
You know when you know something but it is more like a superficial knowing, and then one day you just 'get' it. It hits you and you go 'Of course!' That's how I came to understand this mistake.
It is a mistake I never made in any of my other businesses. You know why? Because they fit my model of a 'proper' business and didn't feel so personal. I knew how a 'proper' business ran, what was okay and what wasn't.
Does your business feel really personal to you? Could you be making this same mistake?
This will resonate if you have a business that you put yourself into, a business where you don't just care about your bottom line, but you also care about your clients, you care about the results they get from working with you and you care about how you and your business are perceived, so you can be a bit sensitive about it...
You know what you do makes a difference, it changes lives. But doing business the way you do it means you put yourself 'on the line', that any criticisms or thoughtless comments and misunderstandings feel so personal and bring up all your 'stuff'.
Running a business the way we do makes our business not only our livelihood but also our personal growth path. When we're into personal growth we can take on board too much in regard to what gets thrown at us as a business owner. We can take on too much responsibility. This I think is the root of my - and possibly your - big mistake.
The big mistake? Taking things personally.
Business is business. When we take things personally it clouds our judgement, it creates fear and confusion.
If something isn't working in your business - any aspect of it - it's not personal, it is just a message that some aspect of your business system or communication or delivery needs adjusting.
If people aren't buying what you offer then the issue may be the people you are offering it to aren't your market or the way you are offering it isn't appealing to them. It's not personal. How your market responds to your offers is simply a message of whether or not your business needs to make some adjustments.

Is it that you are so personally invested that the business's success or failure feels like a reflection on your personally, a reflection of your capability?
It isn't. It's all just indicators and learnings to help you navigate your path to creating success for you. Your results or lack there of are not personal.
