3 Key Behaviours Of A Crutch-Seeker
Do you have this feeling inside yourself of just not being satisfied, of being just not quite happy?
You know you're not performing at the level you should be, either personally or professionally.
Do you find yourself putting your time (and possibly your money too) in one thing, then another, then another, but none of them really work for you?
You're investing in yourself through time, energy and money, so why don't any of the things you invest in work for you?
Everyone else raves about them but you just end up feeling disappointed, maybe even guilty because you can't make the same investments pay off for you.
Are you constantly trawling Facebook, seeming to randomly look at what everyone else is up to or under the guise of 'getting noticed on social media', but in truth it just distracts you and makes you feel worse about yourself?
You just want to feel better about your life and your business; you feel so unsupported.
Somehow no matter what you try, nothing is quite right.
You're not alone.
What matters though is what you do in response to how you feel. The feelings themselves don't make you a crutch-seeker, it's your behaviour in response that does.
This is what a crutch-seeker would do:
1. Focus on their problem. Wallow in their self-pity.
2. Look for a reason why it is okay to stay exactly where they are.
3. Seek 'solutions' from others, then blame them when they don't get a solution.
Is this you? Is this your client?
Perhaps not. Sometimes it is hard to see how behaviour can fit those 3 points above because as crutch-seekers we can disguise this behaviour, dress it up, make it all so plausible and reasonable.
Do you recognise any of these scenarios:
You tend to notice what's missing, what you're not getting right, what others are doing better, rather than what you have going for you, what you do well?
You invest in something with full intention of fixing the issue you have, but then get distracted from doing the work you are asked to do? Other people need you, you don't have enough time to get everything done, you don't know enough to do what needs to be done, you have technical issues... lots of 'valid' reasons.
You find yourself investing time, energy or money into working with another person and then expect them to 'fix' your problems, and when they don't you blame them for promising you something they didn't deliver?
Any of these things happening once is completely valid, but what I would love you to think about is whether these things are your pattern. Do they happen consistently for you?
If these things happen to you over and over again, they are crutch-seeking behaviours. You are avoiding taking charge of your life, being responsible and powerful in it. You are choosing scenarios that give you the opportunity to repeat these behaviours.
So... Reassess. Stop acting on stuff constantly. Stop doing for the sake of it. Notice your behaviour. Notice the types of things you choose.
Ask yourself how you can do, be and choose differently so you can get different results for the time, energy and money you invest in yourself.
(Or... consider that at a deep level you don't really want to do what you are trying to do?)
