#1 Life Purpose: What is it?
Purpose is our focus, our intention, our reason to do something or act a certain way.
When we seek purpose in our lives, we are usually looking for
~ clarity or guidance on our life's direction
~ a reason for our existence that can guide our actions, so we can act with sureness and determination.
As a result of immersing myself in fulfilling my own purpose and helping others step into theirs since 2010 I have a slightly different perspective on what our Life Purpose is, and it's this.
Your Life Purpose is not what you do, it's how you do it.
Those who come to me seeking their Life Purpose often expect to find their mission in life, you know 'save the Addo elephants', or 'climb Kilimanjaro', or 'empower young Asian women by teaching them to value themselves in their actions'. But, what they don't realise is that they may enjoy doing those things for a while, but in time they'll feel there's nothing else they can contribute in that area and will start wondering what else they're 'meant' to do, searching for another way make a difference with, another mission.
So what will give you that sense of life long fulfilment and purpose? Let's pick a simpler mission as an example.
Imagine you make it your mission to ensure each of the Starbucks at the motorway stops serve the perfect gluten-free carrot cake - yes, I'm seriously making this up! The point is that it's not the cakes or Starbucks that matter if you want to get that feeling of fulfilment and satisfaction you're looking for. It's how you go about ensuring the gluten-free carrot cakes are perfect at each stop that is key.
Do you do it by lovingly teaching the employees what needs to happen, getting joy out of sharing your knowledge and the connection you get from the team; or are you the organiser in the background masterfully creating a full proof system that has you jumping up and down with satisfaction?
Knowing what your Life Purpose is means that even if you then go on to follow your current inner calling to help women bullied at work, you apply the same how to this mission. This time you might work with the women who are being bullied at work by lovingly teaching them how to deal with the bullying; or if systems are your purpose you might either, give them a system to follow that tells them what-action-to-take-when to deal with the issue or, develop an in-house system for the company that ensures bullying is recognised and dealt with immediately.
To have a consistent, clear idea of what you need to focus on and how you need to behave in order to feel fulfilled and satisfied, to feel your life has the meaning you seek, that you can apply to each and every new exciting opportunity that comes you way, is pure gold.
Next Steps: If you're not ready to discover your Life Purpose with the help of anyone else, then you might find it useful to create a check list or vision map for yourself given what you already know about yourself. Put it up somewhere so you can see it and refer to it to remind yourself what you want and how you want to be.
You can include things like:
a) what you need to experience to remain motivated e.g. respect, attention, results, connection;
b) what roles you know result in you feeling good about yourself e.g. the organiser, the problem-solver, the visionary, the helper, the ideas-person, the get-it-done gal;
c) what really matters to you e.g. family, good manners, paying-it-forward, how people treat their animals;
d) your boundaries, what you won't put up with e.g. being openly lied to, betrayal, someone hitting your dog, unsupportive criticism;
e) people you admire and why - it'll give you clues to who you want to be;
f) what you want - not just things, but experiences and how you want to feel, how you want to live, how you want to interact with others, what you'd like to be remembered for...
