How To Get Unstuck: Lessons #1&2
If anyone is planning on giving out a degree in 'stuckness' I'd like to put my hand up as someone deserving a master in it!
Personally, I didn't want to master the art of getting stuck (who does?!), but somehow I did anyway.
But in the process I learned a great deal about getting unstuck too, about what it takes to get out of the trap you find yourself in and move forward again.
Here's the first lesson I learned:
The first time I was really aware of being stuck was when I couldn't see any way to follow the career I wanted to - my parents were paying and they made some very sensible points that I couldn't refute.
You know that feeling, when you really want to do something that matters to you but can't? I had no idea what else to do. I felt lost, adrift and rudderless, so I just did what was expected of me, or what was right in front of me, what came next. Do you find yourself doing that? That was me... I did what was expected (because apparently I had an aptitude for it and it would give me job security) so I studied commerce and information systems analysis... sure I did it, sure I made the best of it, but honestly? It felt like I was running on the spot, going nowhere...
It took going for that career again a few years later, this time working 3 jobs to put myself through university and just not being able to do it all, failing to make it happen again, for me to come back to myself; to accept that the path I was trying to follow wasn't going to happen. Ooo, that was painful, but also very freeing.
So my learning no. 1 was to 'stop fighting it and accept whatever situation is keeping me stuck'. It's powerful stuff! For example, one of my clients just couldn't move forward with her business because she was spending so much time worrying about having to give it up and go get a job. When I suggested she accept that she may need to do so and give herself permission to go get a job if she had to, she finally relaxed and let her passion and inspiration move her forward.
Once I accepted it wasn't going to happen I searched for other options. Although I love analysis in general, systems analysis bored me and I didn't want to get stuck in a career doing it, so I looked around for other options. All I could think of was a certainty I'd felt since age 6, that I was meant to grow up in southern Africa then move to London in the UK. Amazing how it all came together so easily when I stopped resisting that inner certainty and in no time I had moved to London and a completely strange, but exciting new life.
My learning no. 2 is that 'I already know what the next step is', I'm usually just resisting it because it doesn't fit with what I think is sensible to do. Honestly, I think I'm still learning this lesson, repeatedly, as ignoring it still gets me stuck occasionally.
Next Steps: What are you trying so hard to make happen it's keeping you stuck? What feels like the next step for you, even if it doesn't seem logical or sensible? Do you have along buried or ignored desire deep down inside you? Could it be your next step?
