Remembering Who You Are

Sometimes it's hard to be yourself in this world.

My earliest memory is one of wonder. Like all babies I liked my toes, and then when they were encased in a pair of baby sandals where each strap was a different colour, I was riveted. So impressed was I by these fabulous colours all together in one place that the memory imprinted itself into my brain and has never faded. Looking back at pictures I realised that I was about 8 months old at the time. For me to have a memory from that far back you have to know how impressed my little self was!

To this day bright colours lift my spirit and bring a smile to my face and I'm grateful for that memory because it reminds me who I am, or at least a little of who I am. So when well meaning souls get on my case about my branding colours being the "wrong" green or make one of those deprecating comments about my handbag being "very bright", I laugh.

My 8 month old memory reminds me who I am. It acts like a compass in the fog that life can so easily become. However, there is so much more of who I am that over the years I have forgotten, and in forgetting it is so easy to become distracted or lost or confused or influenced by others.

Like you, I arrived in this world filled with the joy of the purely innocent, ready to relish this thing called living, filled with wonder and curiosity about this place I'd found myself in, enthusiastic to explore, reaching out with love - never considering it might not be what I got in return.

Deep down, do you remember that feeling? The openness, the joy and wonder?

We forget our early years, and the less they match what we expected when we are first born, the more we forget.

We forget what gives us real joy.

We forget what we really want.

We forget what we deserve.

We forget ourselves.

Instead we learn that if we want to belong, if we want to receive the love and connection we seek, we need to please those around us, we need to follow what seem to me to be every changing rules and expectations... and so we become diminished, faded versions of our true selves, less enthusiastic, less curious, less joyful.

Each time we hide a part of ourselves to fit in, to belong, to please others, our joy fades a little more.

You were never born to fit in. You were never born to be bland, or have a life that feels more humdrum than not.

You were born to shine, to relish your experiences (good and "bad"), to learn and grow but most of all you were born to be you, uniquely you.

We are here to revel in our uniqueness, to express it and share it. It's the spice we add to life around us. Being who we are designed to be, our true selves is what makes life for us and those around us, delicious.

Remember who you are. Delve into your earliest memories of wonder and delight. Follow your joys, no matter how small and simple they might be. They are your compass back to you. They are the core strength that reminds you who you are.

Never do what others tell you, you "should" do. What do they know? Their wisdom is their own, for themselves. You can ask advice, but ultimately assess, then always follow what feels true for you. Trust yourself.

Remember who you are.
